Biography

 

Dr. János Drábik, a retired senior program editor of Radio Free Europe, was born on June 9, 1938, in Budapest. He originally trained as a cellist. He completed his musical studies at the Ferenc

Erkel Music Art School and Music High School in Budapest, where he graduated in 1956. However, due to a hand injury, he was forced to change his career path. He finished his studies at the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences of ELTE in 1960, and in 1968 at ELTE’s Faculty of Arts, where he studied philosophy in the evening. In 1971, he passed the bar exam, having previously completed the MUOSZ School of Journalism.

He worked in various legal, editorial, and public administration positions until November 1979.

Before leaving for America, he led the legal department at ERBE. He continued his studies at New York University and became a registered legal advisor in the State of New York in 1981. In 1983, he moved to Munich to join Radio Free Europe, where he wrote and edited numerous programs under the name Pál Kézdi. He authored series on topics including Stalinism, the American Constitution, neo-conservatism, and the history of the Soviet Union. For five years, he edited the world economic magazine and the program “Western Way,” which analyzed the functioning of democratic institutions. In February 1989, the president of Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty awarded him the “Superior Performance Award” for his outstanding performance in 1988, primarily for his 32-part series on the American Constitution.

From 1983, he actively participated in the activities of the Széchenyi Circle in Munich, where he gave several lectures. From 1993 to 1998, he served as the secretary of the Széchenyi Circle. He writes regularly for the Nemzetőr newspaper published in Munich and other daily and weekly papers in Hungary. His studies have been published in several journals. He was a chief contributor and later the deputy international editor of the book newspaper Leleplező, which started in 1999. He regularly gives lectures on the interrelations between human-centered society, democracy, and the monetary system. He is a founding member of the “Coalition for Survival” movement, established in April 2000, aimed at preserving Hungarian land, creating the conditions for a Garden-Hungary, restoring Hungary’s economic sovereignty, realizing participatory democracy, extending the scope of referendums, and managing money as a fundamental national institution. He is currently working on a professional paper dealing with the interrelations between the international monetary system and democracy.

From 1997 to March 2000, he was a member of the presidency of Hungarian associations operating in Germany, BUOD, and from 1996, he was elected to the assembly of MVSZ, representing Southern Germany. In the 1998 parliamentary elections, he was a candidate for the KDNP in Budapest’s 1st electoral district. He is married; his wife is a chemist who was a scientific researcher at the University of Munich.
